MAR 7 - Nooks and Crannies, a progression into rock gardening

Overview: An exciting sea kayaking course designed for intermediate paddlers ready to advance their skills by exploring dynamic coastal rock gardens, where waves interact with rocks, reefs, and cliffs.

Focus: Progressive introduction to rock gardening techniques, including navigating narrow channels, pour-overs, surges, and tight maneuvers in "nooks and crannies" of the rocky shoreline.

Key Skills Covered:

• Reading ocean swells, waves, and water features around rocks

• Precise boat control, edging, bracing, and stroking in dynamic conditions

• Timing entries and exits through rock features safely

• Group management, scouting, and risk assessment in rough water

• Launches, landings, and rescues near rocks

Prerequisites: Solid foundational sea kayaking skills (e.g., efficient forward stroke, reliable braces, self and assisted rescues); experience in moderate conditions recommended.
